Working with Trauma
This is a workshop for the experienced dancer who wants to learn to use the vocabulary of belly dance as means of re-empowerment for trauma survivors. Traumatic experiences can leave behind mistrustful messages about the nature of life, being and connection. These messages eat away at our capacity to have faith and hope in the future. They crystallize into fear-based body patterns that inhibit our ability to fully occupy our own strong selves.
In this workshop, we will learn to use belly dance to introduce a new, affirmative set of experiences and beliefs into a closed body system. We will explore the strength and stability of the hip circle, and it’s capacity to bring us fully back into the birthright of living rooted in our pelvic floor. We’ll use the crescent moon movement to rock and hold us. And through that movement, we will learn to integrate the oldest and most soothing of mother messages, that we are loved and lovable just for our own selves. Through shimmies, we will come to understand that pushing and over-extending ourselves is not the way to strength . Instead we’ll come to know, that the surest path to power comes from relaxing into the flow and momentum of an experience. And as we immerse ourselves in undulation, we will re-connect to the reliability of ongoing rhythm of life, and learn to trust that no matter how far out to sea life’s challenges toss us, there is always a life current pulling us safely back to shore.
