Taqsim Beledi / “Baladi Eshra” Workshop with Dahlia

dahlia belediTaqsim Beledi, or, “Baladi Eshra,” is Dahlia’s all-time favorite style of belly dance.  As implied by the word, “taqsim,” the dance itself is completely improvisational, every time.  This urban and popular style is performed and enjoyed by all Egyptian people, as opposed to “Sharqi” dances which are performed on a public stage for an audience.  The relationship between the musician(s), drummer and dancer is so intimate, spontaneous, and perfect, it is what makes this dance such a special experience for the performers and in turn, so loved by all.  This style is typified by characteristic shoulder and arm movements, hand placements and gestures, hip movements, shimmies and undulations.  The quality of movements could best be described as grounded, loose, uncontrolled, fun, earthy, unabashed and very sensual.

In this two-hour workshop, Dahlia will demonstrate and teach a variety of basic Beledi style movements as well as help students through active listening, train their ears to recognize this style of dance and “what to do, when.”  Basic belly dance experience recommended.
